Free of plastic in Cancun, a project for the following years.

Since last year, the goal had been for Cancún to be a “free of plastic” city.

Plastic today has generated a very important pollution in the world. The success of Cancun is its image and its environment so, for its preservation, proposals are being made to attack this problem.

99 percent of all plastics are produced from fossil fuels, which causes excessive pressure on limited non-renewable energy sources.
At present it is difficult to do without plastics, not only for its usefulness but also for the economic importance they have. This is reflected in the growth rates of this industry that, since the beginning of the last century, exceeds almost all industrial activities.

Last year the tourism sector was producing 150 to 400 tons of plastic per day and up to 15 percent could be plastic trash that is reaching the oceans.

The option to replace the use of plastic with some other environmentally friendly product is being viewed positively.

The governors anticipate that in three years, Cancun could be one of the first cities in Mexico free of plastics.

How?

The plan works in conjunction with the Ecology, Tourism, as well as the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) and Siresol in the project named Yaakun Cha ‘. Each one from its competences will, in the first instance, the work of awareness among hotel sector, restaurant, business, commercial and citizenship in general. The whole city must unite to achieve the goal, in at least three years.

The next stage is the implementation and would touch the next mayor’s office to do it, in which they contemplate incentives to businesses, restaurants and hotels that demonstrate that they stopped using straws, plastic bags and disposable containers.

For the third year of the campaign, they must go up to terms of law to make it mandatory to stop using plastics in tourist and commercial areas of the city, in which sanctions are applied to those who do not respect the regulations.

March 22 | International Water Day

The International Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22 as a means of drawing attention to the importance of water and the defense of the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

On thisInternational Water Day we remember that “Water is the basis of sustainable development”. The reduction of poverty, economic growth and environmental sustainability are based on water resources and the range of services they provide. From food and energy security to human and environmental health, water contributes to improving social welfare and inclusive growth, which affects the livelihood of billions of human beings.

Progress towards achieving most of the sustainable development goals requires a significant improvement in water management throughout the world.

We must better understand the complex interactions between resources that are related to each other such as water, food and energy. And we must recognize that it is impossible to order these resources in a sustainable way if we treat them in isolation. All forms of energy production affect the quantity and quality of water available.

There is enough water on the planet for everyone. What we still lack is better governance and the collective courage to reach equitable agreements, which must be based on the results of research and reliable data.International Water Day.

Do you know what Responsible Luxury Tourism is?

Ecotourism does not always mean compostable toilets with brown paper, vegetarian food and sleeping in cabins. Every day there are more hotel chains and ecotourism programs, also known as eco-tourism, which are implementing measures to live in harmony with the environment that surrounds them.

But how can these two be balanced? It seems a contradiction but sustainable tourism is already being practiced and is effective. It begins with the protection of the flora and fauna, the constructions are every day of less impact towards the environment, it encourages a low consumption of energy and water treatment methods are applied with what is called today as “blue technologies” .

Some of the trends in blue technologies are: The micro-irrigation system, or low consumption irrigation, low cost, household appliances to purify water with low electricity consumption and the prevention of water leakage in infrastructure, among many others. Energy saving in developments and hotels with improvements for energy efficiency with: minimization of color or cold loss in rooms and common areas to avoid using both air conditioners or heating, check periodically for leaks, change filters air regularly, occupancy sensors and daylight so that only lights are used when necessary, solar panels to heat the water and polarized sheets in the windows to reduce heat input.

In hotels in the Riviera Maya the staff is also contributing to an improvement of the environment who are volunteers in beach cleaning, recycling of oil in the kitchens and where the same guests choose to wash their sheets in a less regular way to contribute to the water saving, to which is added the use of biodegradable detergents. A company highly recognized for its environmental conservation in Quintana Roo is Experiencias Xcaret, if you want to know more about it click here.

But our society also faces a greater challenge: to educate customers who often do not understand the nuances and complexities of sustainability or how they can do their bit to help develop ecotourism. Ecotourism or ecotourism is a tourist activity whose purpose is to minimize the number of damages that tourists can generate on the natural environment.

It is a type of tourism very related to ethics that goes beyond the mere enjoyment of the traveler.

It is the largest in the world.

“This is an effort of more than 20 years; to travel hundreds of kilometers of caves submerged in Quintana Roo mainly; of which I dedicated 14 years to explore this monstrous Sac Actun System, now everyone’s job is to conserve it.” said Robbert Schmittner, who is the guide of this wonderful project.

This huge underwater tunnel is also a significant archaeological find.

“This immense Underwater Cavern represents the most important submerged archaeological site in the world; because it has a hundred archaeological contexts. Including evidence of the first settlers of America; extinct fauna and remains of the Mayan culture.” said Guillermo Anda, researcher at the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico and director of the research group Gran Acuífero Maya.

The team will continue working in the area to try to unite Sac Actun with other underwater systems also located in Tulum. They also want to analyze the quality of water and its impact on the biodiversity that inhabits these ancient waters.
